Speech-to-text feedback can save you time by turning your verbal comments into typed feedback. One downside is that it does not recognize punctuation commands while speaking so you will have to manually add punctuation marks.

Directions

Open a student submission in the Speedgrader.
Scroll to the bottom of the submission panel and select the icon of the speaker.
Select the red dot to start recording. You do not need to stop the speech-to-text while you pause speaking. Do NOT try to use punctuation commands like saying "comma" or "period."
When you are finished, press the grey square to stop the speech-to-text. The text in the speech-to-text window will go into the general comment box in the Speedgrader.
You will need to add punctuation, correct capitalization after punctuation, and fix any mistakes.
Select the "Submit" button as normal to save the comment.

Tips

Check for Pop-Ups Requesting Permissions

The first time you use the speech-to-text feature, you may see a pop-up requesting permission to access your microphone. Be sure to allow access.

Use Two Windows

Because you can pause speaking while using the speech-to-text feature, you can use it to record your feedback while you are reading through the student submission. Unfortunately, the speech-to-text pop-up window covers up the student submission. If you have the submission open in a side-by-side window or second monitor, you can access both at the same time.

Press Submit Before Using Speech-to-Text Again

If you press the speaker icon to use speech-to-text a second time, it will overwrite your first comment. Make sure you select the "Submit" button to save your comment before using speed-to-text to add another comment.
