What is the Override Final Grade Feature?

The Total Column in the Canvas gradebook cannot be modified; however, the Final Grade Override Column can be enabled in the course gradebook. This feature is an optional feature that the course instructor can turn on. The Override column appears in the gradebook and allows the instructor to input a new grade that will be displayed to the student instead of the original total column. The instructor can adjust a student's final grade based on factors outside of the standard grading system, like special circumstances, grade considerations or extra credit. It is also a means by which the course instructor can apply point deductions at the end of the course when applicable.

Instructions: Turn on the Final Grade Override Feature

Click on the Grades link in the white navigation menu on the left side of the screen.

3. Click on the Advanced Tab

4. Select the box to Allow final grade override and then click the Apply Settings button.

5. A column titled "Override" will appear to the right of your total column in the gradebook.

Important Notes

Students will only see one gradebook total column titled "Total", while the course instructor will see the original Total Column and the Override Column.
Students will see the percent total or the letter grade, based on what the course instructor selects for visibility. Keep in mind, the student will be able to see the numerator and denominator (Total Points Earned/Total Points Available).

When a final grade override is entered as a letter grade, the percentage score for the assignment is the lower limit of the range assigned to that letter grade in the grading scheme. For example, your course grading scheme may designate a range of 86% to 89% for a B+ letter grade. Entering a B+ for a final grade override assigns a percentage of 86%. To ensure students receive a specific percentage for their final grade, enter the grade override as a percentage.

When to Use the Override Final Grade Feature?

Use this feature to Add or Deduct points from the Total calculated grade. The gradebook does not auto calculate the override grade column. Course instructors will need to manually add to or subtract points from the total column and then manually enter the new grade in the final grade override column.
